Arlington County police transported two people to the hospital Friday night after they were struck by lightning, police spokeswoman Crystal Nosal said.
The lightning strike came as rain poured down across the region Friday night. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for northwest D.C. and its western suburbs.
NBC Washington reported that several people, including two nuns, were trapped by rushing water in Fairfax County before police rescued them.
About 20,000 Dominion Virginia customers lost power in the storm, and about 4,300 Pepco customers lost power — most of them in Prince George’s County. A Pepco spokesman said many trees and wires were downed by the storm. As of 2 p.m. Saturday, only a handful of those who lost power in the storm remained without power, spokesmen from the two companies confirmed.
