ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Shareholders at Entergy have rejected a resolution by New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli that calls for minimizing nuclear waste the company stores in spent fuel pools and transferring it into dry-cask storage.

The comptroller’s office says the preliminary count Friday shows the proposal received about 5 percent of votes cast.

DiNapoli is sole trustee of New York’s $152 billion pension fund for state and municipal workers, which owns more than 700,000 Entergy shares valued at about $49 million.

The proposed resolution says dry-cask storage of spent, cooled nuclear fuel in steel containers surrounded by inert gas is safer.

New Orleans-based Entergy operates two New York plants, Indian Point in Buchanan and the James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant near Oswego.

Its board said the resolution would limit company flexibility.
