Cyphers Agency puts listening first

The Cyphers Agency, an Annapolis-based, full-service advertising agency, likes to think of itself as a fly on the wall.

“We listen and open our minds to what the consumer is saying,” Cyphers? Vice President and Creative Director Darren Easton said. “Not many agencies embrace that.”

Easton stresses that even though Cyphers may not be a huge name in the advertising world, its talented employees can get the job done. “We have some of the best talent strategically and creatively as the other agencies, we just don?t have the brand name.” Which, he says, is something the company is looking to change.

“The only disadvantage we have is our brand recognition. Brand names people are loyal and comfortable with,” Easton said. “We?ve had a hard time getting our name out there. We?re making an effort to go out and do it and compete with those brand names.”

But that doesn?t seem to have stopped them from landing clients such as Rams Head, Sunny?s Surplus and Record and Tape Traders. “We don?t specialize in any particular industry because we feel like when you start to do that, the ideas become weaker,” Easton said. “What makes [Cyphers] unique is that we are more in the people business. As long as I can relate to a 35-year-old male of x income or a 50-year-old housewife, I think that there?s not an industry that we can?t do well in.”

Rams Head has been with the Cyphers Agency since 2004 when they opened Rams Head Live in Baltimore.

“It was a really high-profile overtaking up there, since there would be national exposure and entertainers coming through,” Rams Head Vice President Erin Brunst said.

“We were looking for a creative partner for the look and feel and branding of that Rams Head facility. [Cyphers] produced exactly what wewere looking for.”
