Former presidential candidate John McCain endorsed Bob Ehrlich for governor of Maryland on Monday, less than 24 hours before the state’s primary election.

Ehrlich is the front runner in the race for Maryland’s Republican nomination for governor next to his single opponent, political newcomer Brian Murphy.

But Murphy last month won the endorsement of McCain’s presidential running mate, Sarah Palin.

McCain gave his endorsement following a meeting at the U.S. Naval Academy, the Associated Press reported.

Ehrlich is seeking a rematch against Democratic Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who unseated Ehrlich from office in 2006.
