Liberty University has tapped Jerry Prevo to be acting head of the university as Jerry Falwell Jr. takes an indefinite leave of absence.
The school announced its acting appointment of the chairman of the university’s board of trustees on Monday after Falwell got into some hot water by posting a photo with his wife’s assistant in which they both had their pants unzipped, and Falwell was holding a darkly colored beverage. In a radio interview after posting the picture, Falwell explained that it was just a joke and that he would “try to be a good boy” from now on.
Falwell has been involved in a handful of other controversies as of late. Liberty University has a strict dress code and no-drinking policy.
Prevo has served as chairman of the board since 2003. He recently retired from his position as the senior pastor of a Baptist church in Anchorage, Alaska.
“We have a world-class leadership team at Liberty University who will support me in running our operations on a day-to-day basis and fulfilling our spiritual mission unabated: Training Champions for Christ,” Prevo said in a statement. “Please pray for us as well as the Falwell family as we embark on our academic year and so we may continue to be united in our common purpose and our faith in Christ.”
