Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Cory Booker said he believes his girlfriend, reportedly actress Rosario Dawson, is first lady material.
The New Jersey Democrat, who could become the first bachelor president in more than a century if he wins the White House in 2020, was grilled about his personal life in a lengthy interview with “The Breakfast Club” radio show on Tuesday. While he didn’t mention Dawson by name, he confirmed he was in a relationship during his conversation with radio hosts Charlamagne Tha God and Angela Yee.
“Before I declared for president, I’ve been dating somebody who’s really special,” Booker, 49, said. “I’ve got a boo.”
Charlamagne Tha God then asked whether his girlfriend would “make a nice first lady.” Booker replied: “Yes, she would.”
“This is the most, of all the issues we’ve talked about, this is the most uncomfortable part of this interview,” the senator said.
Dawson, 39, is a Hollywood actress who has appeared in such films as “Rent,” “Sin City,” and “Seven Pounds.” According to Page Six, Dawson and Booker have been spotted together since late last year.
During the radio interview, Booker pushed back on concerns his single status affected his electability.
“If Donald Trump can get elected president at this point with the personal life that he has, then anybody can,” he said. “The reality is I am ready to serve, I’m ready to put my heart, my spirit, my energy, my ideas, my love for the American people, and let myself be judged.”
Booker officially declared his bid for the White House last week, coinciding with the first day of Black History Month. He joins a historically diverse primary field, which includes Senate colleagues Kamala Harris of California, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii; former Rep. John Delaney of Maryland; Obama-era housing secretary Julian Castro; South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg; and entrepreneur Andrew Yang also are competing for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.
