A Marine pilot was killed when his F/A-18C Hornet fighter jet crashed in California Thursday night, according to the Marine Corps.
The jet crashed near the Marine base at Twentynine Palms. The pilot was based out of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, the Corps announced on Friday.
The cause of the 10:30 p.m. PST crash is under investigation. The Hornet was participating in a training mission, officials said.
The name of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing pilot has not been released. No further details have been provided.

Twentynine Palms, in San Bernardino County, is approximately 175 miles northeast of San Diego County.
