President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama celebrated May 4, aka Star Wars Day, by releasing footage of the couple breaking out some dance moves with the “Star Wars” franchise’s most iconic astromech droid: R2-D2.
“This is my favorite song,” said Michelle Obama, clapping and dancing with her husband and R2-D2 while the 2014 hit song “Uptown Funk” from Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson plays in the background.
A few moments in, the president beckons for a Stormtrooper to join in on the fun. “Come on Storm Trooper, come on,” he said. After convincing a second Stormtrooper to jump in, the president exclaimed, “Uptown Funk baby.” R2-D2 was a bit more subdued, simply swiveling its dome side to side.
In its tweet that was sent out along with the video, the White House said, “Dance. Or dance not. There is no try. #MayThe4thBeWithYou,” which is a play off of Jedi Master Yoda’s famous words.
In December of last year, President Obama cut his annual year-end press conference short, saying he was doing so to attend a screening of the latest film in the franchise, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” That same day while White House press secretary Josh Earnest spoke to reporters, he was joined by R2-D2 and a pair of Stormtroopers.
It is not clear if the video was recorded on the same day.
