Judge orders Dish Network to pay $280 million in robocall lawsuit

A federal judge in Illinois ordered Dish Network to pay $280 million in penalties to the U.S. government and the states of California, Illinois, North Carolina and Ohio for violating the do-no-call list.

The fines and damages awarded by U.S. District Judge Sue E. Myerscough “may be the largest monetary judgment in a robocall case,” according to Reuters. Dish made “millions and millions” of calls in violation of do-not-call lists, Myerscough noted in the court’s opinion Monday.

“The evidence supports the conclusion that the pressure needs to be maintained to keep Dish’s marketing personnel from reverting to their practice of trying to get around the rules,” Myerscough wrote.

Dish reportedly plans to appeal the federal court’s ruling.
