NEW YORK (AP) — Comptroller Scott Stringer is saying that New York City’s public housing authority failed to comply with federal and city laws when hiring its workers.
Stringer released an audit Thursday that said that the New York City Housing Authority did not always utilize contractors who hire public housing residents and low-income workers.
Stringer says that failure violated the authority’s own regulations.
The comptroller claimed the city failed to check that contractors were using the required workers.
Stringer said the mistakes cost the city $475,000 and deprived public housing residents of $184,000 in wages.
NYCHA released a statement saying that it has begun correcting the practice.
Mayor Bill de Blasio made improving conditions at NYCHA a major campaign promise last year.
