MATHEWS, La. (AP) — The Lafourche Parish Council has delayed awarding a contract to promote tourism using a grant from BP PLC.

Like other Louisiana parishes affected by the 2010 BP oil spill, Lafourche received a $2.1 million grant to spend promoting local tourism starting in 2011.

The Daily Comet reports (http://bit.ly/WYydzl ) that most parishes that received similar grants spent the money in 2011 and 2012. Lafourche elected to spend its allocation across three years. The parish has spent most of the first grant on promotions through its “Dig In” campaign, aimed at luring visitors to the parish.

Lafourche has about $600,000 from the original grant and was recently awarded another $500,000 to continue promotions, according to Julie Barrilleaux, special projects coordinator for the parish.
