Ukrainian family killed by Russian mortar while trying to flee

A mother and her two children, as well as a family friend, were killed by a Russian mortar while trying to cross the Irpin River to get to Kyiv, according to a report.

On Sunday, Russian forces hit a bridge being used to evacuate civilians. There were few Ukrainian troops in the area, and those who were present were there to assist civilians escaping, according to the report.

A New York Times team witnessed the event, and a freelance journalist named Andriy Dubchak was able to capture it on video.

The video shows a large blast, followed by clouds of dust and people scrambling for shelter. When the dust clears, multiple people are laying on the ground next to suitcases and a pet carrier. When soldiers rush to help them, they began screaming, “Medic, medic!”
