The Pro-choice Delusion

WORK IN PROGRESS Marc Ambinder reports that “Obama’s campaign has polling data suggesting that an unusually large number of pro-choice Democrats don’t know that McCain is pro-life.” I’d be interested to hear what constitutes unusually large. In this SurveyUSA poll of Ohio voters from June, 28 percent of McCain supporters say they’re pro-choice, but 25 percent of Obama’s supporters say they’re pro-life. As Ramesh Ponnuru notes National Review, the idea that focusing on abortion is support for taxpayer funding of abortion and late-term abortions would :

The pro-abortion lobby that currently styles itself “NARAL Pro-Choice America” recently commissioned a survey purporting to demonstrate that the more voters find out about McCain’s anti-abortion record, the less they will like him. Some reporters bought it. Actually, all the poll demonstrated is that pro-choice voters are likely to turn against McCain if they are misinformed that he opposes abortion even to save a woman’s life. Nobody has, to my knowledge, polled pro-life voters on whether they would be less willing to support Obama after finding out that he supports taxpayer funding of abortion and late-term abortions – which are, unlike the NARAL poll’s assertions, true statements. Perhaps the McCain campaign should commission one.
