CLEVELAND – Donald Trump engaged in a bit of counterprogramming Monday night, phoning into Fox News while primetime speakers praised him on stage at his own nominating convention.
Minutes before Trump and his wife, Melania, were expected to take the stage at the Republican National Convention, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee called Bill O’Reilly to express his frustration with Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
“I beat him very badly. I beat him very, very soundly,” Trump told the Fox News host. Earlier in the day, Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort said Kasich’s absence from the four-day confab in Cleveland was “embarrassing” to his home state.
Trump continued, “You see the love in this massive arena that I’m about to go into very soon … it’s incredible.”
Trump’s wife will deliver her first major speech to Republicans later this evening under the “Make America Safe Again” theme that dominated opening day at the convention.
