A boating incident on the Congo river left 60 people dead and more than 200 missing, according to Congo’s humanitarian affairs minister.
Minister Steve Mbikayi reported that a whaling boat with more than 700 people aboard and cargo sank Sunday night and that 300 survivors were found near the site of the disaster in the western part of the country.
“We sympathize with the bereaved families and demand the sanctions against all those responsible for the transport sector,” Mbikayi tweeted, according to Twitter’s English translation.
Mbikayi also said night navigation played a role in the crash.
The vessel was traveling from the capital of Kinshasa to Mbandaka when it sank near Longola Ekoti, according to Voice of America.
