Britney Spears’s father agrees to step down as conservator

James Spears, the father of Britney Spears, agreed he would eventually step down as conservator of the pop star’s estate.

The elder Spears made the commitment in legal documents filed Thursday in a Los Angeles court, which indicated he was already working to transition out of the role with his 39-year-old daughter’s former legal representation, Sam Ingham, who resigned as her lawyer in July.

However, James Spears objected to the notion he should be immediately removed as conservator and said his 13 years of experience and knowledge should be shared with whoever succeeds him. He also said the conditions must meet his expectations to agree to step aside.

Britney Spears’s lawyer, Matthew Rosengart, welcomed his client’s father’s “concession” but said he would continue to investigate his management of Britney’s estate.

“We are pleased that Mr. Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed. It is vindication for Britney. We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others,” Rosengart said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr. Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter’s estate, and I look forward to taking Mr. Spears’s sworn deposition in the near future.”

The battle between Britney Spears and her father over the pop star’s fortune has blossomed over the past few months into a cultural-legal movement, with court testimony she gave in June alleging abusive treatment under the conservatorship feeding support for the “Free Britney” campaign.
