WESTBURY, N.Y. (AP) — A state trooper was injured when an out of control car crashed into his cruiser on a Long Island highway.

State police say it happened around 7 a.m. Saturday near the Glen Cove Road exit on the Northern State Parkway.

They say a 2006 Honda Civic spun across the highway and struck the cruiser as the trooper was stopping to investigate a single-car crash in the right shoulder.

The trooper was pulled from the vehicle and taken to Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola for treatment of what state police say are non-life threatening injuries.

State police say Honda driver Christopher Contaldi was cut as he tried to help the trooper and was also treated at Winthrop.

The crash closed the exit for about 2½ hours.
