Jesse Ventura flirts with third-party presidential run

Jesse Ventura for president? Maybe.

The former professional wrestler turned Minnesota governor tweeted Monday morning he was “testing the waters” about running for president on the Green Party ticket.

“IF I were going to run for president, the GREEN party would be my first choice. I’ve endorsed the party and I’m testing the waters,” he wrote.

Ventura has said in the past that he is considering running in 2020 but added that any decision wouldn’t be made until potentially June. The Green Party is expected to nominate its candidate in July.

“To be clear: I haven’t filed anything,” Ventura wrote Monday. “I authorized a letter of interest that was sent on my behalf to the Greens and I’m testing the waters for Green Party nomination. I’m an independent. I’m not a Democrat or a Republican because I know they’re not the solution.”

Ventura was mayor of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, from 1991 to 1995 before winning the governorship in 1998 under the Reform Party banner. His outsider campaign was celebrated as a triumph of grassroots organizing and third-way politics.

He did not seek reelection in 2002.

In 2016, Ventura considered running for president under the Libertarian Party.
