Facebook bans Marjorie Taylor Greene for 24 hours

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was barred from posting on Facebook Monday, less than a day following her personal Twitter account being shut down.

Greene announced that Facebook locked her out for 24 hours on Gettr, a social media platform preferred by some conservatives.

“Facebook has joined Twitter in censoring me,” Greene wrote on Gettr. “This is beyond censorship of speech.”

The Facebook post listed ways that America is “no longer free” because of COVID-19 mandates, including calling the unvaccinated healthy people a “subclass,” stating that coronavirus masks make children sick, and that “extremely high amounts of COVID vaccine deaths are ignored and government forced vaccine mandates increase.”

The Republican House member will not be allowed to post or comment from her Facebook account for 24 hours due to violating a misinformation policy.

“I’m an elected Member of Congress representing over 700,000 US tax paying citizens and I represent their voices, values, defend their freedoms, and protect the Constitution,” Greene stated.

A spokesperson for Meta, the parent company of Facebook, told the Washington Examiner that the post violated the platform’s policies but that it was not permanently barring her from her account.

“Removing her account for this violation is beyond the scope of our policies,” the spokesperson added.

Greene questioned Facebook’s ability to determine misinformation.

“Who appointed Twitter and Facebook to be the authorities of information and misinformation?” Greene wrote on GETTR. “When Big Tech decides what political speech of elected Members is accepted and what’s not then they are working against our government and against the interest of our people.”

The lawmaker has faced disciplinary actions from the Facebook and Twitter in the past. In September 2020, Facebook deleted a post of Greene while she was still a Republican congressional candidate holding a gun with text that read “SAVE AMERICA. STOP SOCIALISM. DEFEAT THE DEMOCRATS!” In January of 2021 when Twitter suspended key provisions of her account because, they said, she “violated” unexplained rules.
