LAREDO, Texas (AP) — A Laredo-based Border Patrol agent has been charged with conspiring to harbor and conceal illegal immigrants.

U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson says 35-year-old Roberto Cantu Rodriguez was arrested Thursday at work. Rodriguez was appearing Friday before a federal magistrate judge in Laredo.

According to the two-count indictment returned Wednesday, Rodriguez conspired with others for about a year beginning in June 2013 to conceal illegal immigrants. He’s also accused of misprision — having knowledge of a felony and concealing that knowledge.

Conviction on the conspiracy charge carries up to 10 years in prison. A misprision conviction could get him a three-year sentence. Both charges also carry possible fines of up to $250,000.
