Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., warned Tuesday morning President Trump’s problems may extend beyond the investigation into Russia’s meddling if he asked top intelligence officials to push back against the FBI’s investigation into his campaign and Russia.
“It goes further in my mind, as a member of the intelligence committee, than just the focus on the Russia investigation,” Rubio said in an interview on CNN’s “New Day.”
“I just think it goes into the very nature of the intelligence community’s work and its ability to work with the executive branch and the presidency,” he continued.
The Washington Post reported Monday Trump asked Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers to deny claims his associates had ties to Russian officials during the 2016 campaign.
Trump reportedly approached the two intelligence officials after former FBI Director James Comey told a congressional panel in March the FBI was looking into “the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government, and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts.”
The president fired Comey earlier this month.
Neither Coats nor Rogers complied with Trump’s request, the Washington Post reported, and deemed them inappropriate.
