Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine will host his first official meeting with the region’s leaders today to discuss issues from crime to the environment.
On May 18, Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich and D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams met Kaine at the celebratory opening of the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge, a project that former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner worked with both men on previously.
“We are going to renew a commitment to share ideas and more importantly intelligence on gang activity,” said Kevin Hall, a Kaine spokesman. The meeting will include a briefing from the FBI’s office of gang activity, based in Northern Virginia, but staffed by law enforcement from all three jurisdictions.
“Mayor Williams intends to talk about the national increase in juvenile crime and explore how other jurisdictions might cooperate better to benefit residents in all jurisdictions,” said Vincent Morris, a spokesman for the mayor.
Ehrlich is expected to lead a discussion on sex offender enforcement issues and the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay, said Henry Fawell, an Ehrlich spokesman.
“We look forward to sharing best practices on both issues with Gov. Kaine and Mayor Williams,” he said. The meetings, which began in 2003, also address issues of homeland security, transportation and economic development.
