D.C. firefighter Charles Ryan remains in intensive care from burns and injuries he suffered when a roof collapsed during a house fire, but continues to show progress in his rehabilitation, authorities said Thursday.

Ryan, who is also the Riverdale volunteer fire chief, remains on a ventilator and has received skin grafts to his hands, fire officials said. He has been able to walk and exercise his arms. He plans to have surgery Friday for grafts to his legs.

Four others were injured in the blaze last Friday with various degrees of burns and injuries, including Lt. Robert Alverado, and Sgt. Ramon Hounshell, Theodore Douglas and Warren Deaver.

The Riverdale Fire Department is holding a fundraiser all day at Franklin’s restaurant on Tuesday. The restaurant, 5121 Baltimore Ave., in Hyattsville, will donate 20 percent of its purchases to help the firefighter. Donors must turn in itemized receipts to the those and ask that it be added to the fundraiser.
