Maryland gets first female highway administrator

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has tapped Melinda Peters to head the State Highway Administration.

Peters will be the agency’s first female administrator, the state’s Department of Transportation announced.

Peters’ last six years have been spent leading the team constructing the $2.5 billion InterCounty Connector, the final segment of which opens for business next week.

Peters joined the SHA in 1995 as a project engineer. She will now be responsible for overseeing its $1.1 billion budget and staff of 3,100.
