This is a weekend for New Yorkers. For the first time, the New York Yankees will be playing on the Washington Nationals’ home turf, and it will be big.
“This will probably be the highest number of people they’ve had at the stadium since opening weekend,” said Sam Copper, of Alexandria, a Colby College freshman and devoted Yankees fan.
“Even though we don’t know yet, my friends and I definitely have plans to party somewhere,” Copper said. “Obviously there are the tailgates, and it adds more excitement to see them play in town.”
The fact that neither team is off to a fantastic start this year only adds to the excitement, Copper added.
As for the opposition, when asked about the significance of the Yankees playing in D.C., Carleton College junior Alex Zuckerman replied, “I’m a Nats fan, man. [EXPLETIVE] the Yankees!”
Despite the negative vibes, most Yankee fans have seen far worse. “There are going to be a lot of Nats fans this weekend and we’re going to be outnumbered significantly, but not like Boston,” Copper said. “There are a large group of Yankee fans because D.C. is pretty cosmopolitan.”
More fans in the stadium mean more chances to celebrate, and while the outcome of the game may not be certain, serious partying is.
