House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said it will be up to the Democratic National Committee to decide whether to replace its embattled chairwoman, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla.
Pelosi, D-Calif., declined to say whether she sides with Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, who said Schultz should be replaced. Instead, she pointed out that the DNC elects its own chair.
“You should look to the membership of the Democratic National Committee,” Pelosi said when asked about Wasserman Schultz. “Who is the chair of the committee is up to the members of the Democratic National Committee.”
“DNC Chairwoman Wasserman Schultz enjoys the support of Members of the House Democratic Caucus for her leadership in unifying the party and winning in November,” she added.
Sanders, who has essentially lost the nomination to Hillary Clinton, called for the removal of Wasserman Schultz during a Tuesday press conference in Washington D.C. in which he said the Democratic party should be fundamentally transformed. Sanders has complained the primary system was rigged against his grassroots campaign in part because of the superdelegate system that awards power to establishment Democrats to pick the nominee.
