Today was frustrating because there is a ton of important news going on. That, strangely enough, can sometimes give cartoonists fits. You’ve got one opportunity each day to comment on one topic, and you don’t want to blow it. After arriving at the office, I drew 16 — yes, 16 — sketches on Gen. Petraeus’ report and testimony on the Iraq troop surge. I only liked two or three of them. I also had the Osama bin Laden idea in the mix, and because the troop surge debate will be raging for the next few weeks, I decided a 9/11 anniversary cartoon was more in order. Now, on Sept. 11, Americans pay tribute to those who died in New York, Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon. We should always remember who is responsible for those deaths. I very strongly believe we should have captured bin Laden and disabled al-Qaeda before mounting any full-scale assault against Saddam Hussein like we did in 2003. President Bush and his advisers took their eyes off the real immediate threat, and America continues to pay for it.
