Donald Trump on Wednesday posted an article to his Twitter account reaffirming his recent insinuation that President Obama has ulterior motives when it comes to his handling of radical Islamic extremism.
The article, headlined “Hillary Clinton had secret memo stating Obama admin ‘support’ for ISIS,” was published Tuesday by Breitbart News, which has previously come under fire for its positive coverage of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
According to the story, Hillary Clinton received “a classified intelligence report stating that the Obama administration was actively supporting al Qaeda in Iraq, the terrorist group that became the Islamic State.”
Trump shared the article with the caption: “… Media fell all over themselves criticizing what Donald Trump ‘may have insinuated about POTUS.’ But he’s right.”
The article refers readers to a 2012 intelligence information report obtained by the conservative government watchdog Judicial Watch, which noted “the West, Gulf countries and Turkey” supported opposition fighters, which included members of al Qaeda, seeking to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad. The author contends that since the administration created a Syrian rebel training program, Obama is guilty of backing the terror group.
Trump’s decision to share the article follows 48 hours of backlash from Republicans and Democrats who took issue with his claim on Monday that “there’s something going on” with Obama’s counterterrorism strategy.
“Look, we’re led by a man that either is not tough, not smart, or he’s got something else in mind,” the billionaire told Fox News.
Both Obama and Clinton have urged GOP lawmakers to condemn Trump for the remark. The president slammed “that kind of yapping” by Trump and suggested the de facto GOP nominee is “doing the terrorists’ work for them.”
Trump barred the Washington Post from covering his campaign events going forward after they published a story Monday afternoon titled, “Donald Trump suggests President Obama was involved with Orlando shooting.”
