Detroit to host second Democratic primary debate

The Motor City will host the second Democratic National Committee debate of the 2020 presidential primary season.

The DNC announced on Tuesday that the event in Detroit will take place on July 30 and July 31 and will be broadcast during prime time by CNN, CNN International, and CNN en Español.

“Detroit embodies the values and character of the Democratic Party,” DNC Chairman Tom Perez said in a statement. “It’s a city of grit and determination, a city that has gotten knocked down only to get back up stronger. With its diversity, its storied history, and its proud ties to the labor movement, Detroit is the perfect place for our party’s second debate.”

The decision to host the debate over two consecutive nights was made by top Democrats after the Republican National Committee during the 2016 Republican primary tried to accommodate its wide field of 17 major candidates with “undercard” events. There are already about the same number of Democratic contenders competing for the party’s 2020 nomination, with a handful of speculated hopefuls still to declare.

The DNC last month awarded the first debate to Miami. That program will air on June 26 and June 27 via NBC, MSNBC, and Telemundo.
