Want to run for the D.C. council seat left vacant by the now-disgraced Harry Thomas Jr.? Wednesday is your last chance to get into the game. Of course, you have to live in Ward 5. And you have 23 other candidates to contend with. Who’s still interested?
In order to appear on the ballot, candidates must gather 500 signatures from registered voters who live in Ward 5. The race is sure to be a toss-up as 23 people have already filed to appear on the May 15 special election ballot. The deadline to submit petitions for candidates is 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Thomas resigned from his seat in January as part of his guilty plea to stealing more than $300,000 in city grant money meant for youth sports programs. Thomas’ sentencing in federal court is scheduled for May 3.
