Vice President Joe Biden is prepared to attack presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump over his worldview and proposals on immigration and foreign policy in a speech in Washington on Monday.
In the speech before the Center for a New American Security’s conference, Biden will attack Trump without mentioning the candidate’s name. But Biden will accuse the presumptive nominee of trying to “undermine our most important relationships,” particularly with his plan to build a wall and ban Muslims from entering the U.S.
“But if we turn inward, undermine our most important relationships, or seek sound bite solutions in a world defined by complexity,” Biden plans to say. “If we forget who we are, betray our values, and embrace intolerance. We will squander all of our hard-earned progress.”
“If we build walls and disrespect our closest neighbors, we will quickly see all this progress disappear — replaced by a return of anti-Americanism and a corrosive rift throughout our hemisphere,” Biden will say, according to the prepared remarks.
“Alienating 1.5 billion Muslims, the vast, vast majority of whom, at home and abroad, are peace-loving, will only make the problem worse. It plays into the narrative of extremists,” Biden will say. “We shouldn’t give them what they want. We are so much better than that.”
Biden is also planning to hit Trump for “embracing” Russian President Vladimir Putin, who he has praised for being a strong leader throughout the campaign.
This is the second speech in a matter of two weeks in which Biden will take aim at Trump. On June 9, Biden took Trump to task for his constant attacks against Judge Gonzalo Curiel, the judge presiding in the cases involving Trump University. Trump had called his involvement in the case a conflict of interest due to his “Mexican heritage” despite Curiel being born in Indiana.
