Top DOJ official Dana Boente is retiring

Dana Boente, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia who served as acting attorney general this year, is retiring.

His retirement will be effective upon the confirmation of his successor, a spokesman for the Eastern District told the Washington Examiner in an email.

Boente became the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia in 2015 after being nominated by former President Barack Obama. The district is a powerful one, prosecuting cases brought by the federal government and representing the U.S. in civil court cases. The office also is home to the CIA and the Pentagon.

He has been with the Justice Department for more than 30 years, and served as acting attorney general this year after the resignation of Sally Yates. Boente also served briefly as acting deputy attorney general.

Boente is also acting assistant attorney general of the National Security Division, and will remain in both positions until the Senate confirms his replacements.
