Conservative radio host Mark Levin slammed the opening statements of the impeachment managers on Capitol Hill during the opening monologue of his Tuesday show.
“They amended the Constitution of the United States. Illegally. They changed the language to fit their narrative. And now they come before the United States Senate and say if you don’t accept their narrative, if you don’t accept their impeachment charges, then you, the United States Senate, are involved in a cover-up,” Levin said during his opening monologue.
Democrats have charged President Trump with two articles of impeachment accusing him of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
Levin was responding to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff’s opening statement on Tuesday where he reminded senators of their oath to do “impartial justice.”
“You have all now sworn an oath” Schiff said. “Not to each other, not to your legislative leadership, not to the managers or even to the chief justice. You have sworn an oath to do ‘impartial justice.’ That oath binds you. … And that oath requires a fair trial.”
“Abuse of power, even if proved, is not an impeachable offense. That’s exactly what the framers rejected. They didn’t want to give Congress the authority to remove a president because he abused his power. They have to prove treason, they have to prove bribery, or they have to prove other crimes and misdemeanors,” White House defense team lawyer Alan Dershowitz said on MSNBC.
Trump’s defense team also delivered an opening statement and used a part of the time to criticize Schiff and other Democrats.
“It’s very difficult to sit there and listen to Mr. Schiff tell the tale that he just told.” White House defense lawyer Pat Cipollone said. “They said in their brief, ‘We have overwhelming evidence,’ and they are afraid to make their case.”
“There’s no constitutional violation. There’s no statutory violation. There is no violation of a federal court order. This is why they keep throwing up smoke. And I want to tell these five Republicans in the Senate, the weak links in the chain — Romney, Collins, Murkowski, Gardner, Alexander. Let me tell you something. You have a duty to uphold the Constitution. What the House of Representatives has done here is destroy the Constitution. It’s your job to fix it,” Levin recently told Sean Hannity.
