A newly released Fox News poll of Indiana Democrats found Bernie Sanders trails Hillary Clinton by a few points with less than two weeks until the state’s primary May 3.
A net 46 percent of Hoosiers likely to vote Democratic in the primary said they would back the former secretary of state. Sanders was backed by 42 percent of liberal voters in the April 18-21 poll that had a 4 percent margin of error.
The majority of men — 55 percent — preferred the Vermont senator while most women, also 55 percent, preferred the former first lady.
“It’s all about age and gender,” Daron Shaw, Republican pollster who conducted the poll with Democratic pollster Chris Anderson, said in a statement. “As we move away from the South, blacks have been less critical for Clinton’s success and women have become more important.”
Sanders, who has appealed to millennial-age voters across the country, received 72 percent of support from voters under 45 years old compared to Clinton’s 21 percent support rate.
Clinton won 57 percent of voters over the age of 45, a rate lower than which Sanders appeals to young voters.
