Andrew Cuomo says New York will memorialize Ruth Bader Ginsburg with statue in Brooklyn

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that the state will erect a statue in the Brooklyn borough of New York City to honor the life of late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Cuomo announced the memorial on Saturday and said that the statue “will serve as a physical reminder of Justice Ginsburg’s monumental contributions to the America we know today and as an inspiration for all.”

A commission will be appointed to provide recommendations about the exact location, design, and installation of the monument to the governor. Cuomo’s office said in a news release that the commission will reach out to the art community and art organizations as part of the process.

“While the family of New York mourns Justice Ginsburg’s death, we remember proudly that she started her incredible journey right here in Brooklyn,” Cuomo said in a statement.

“Her legacy will live on in the progress she created for our society, and this statue will serve as a physical reminder of her many contributions to the America we know today and as an inspiration for those who will continue to build on her immense body of work for generations to come,” he added.

Ginsburg, born in Brooklyn to a working-class family of Jewish immigrants, died from complications with metastatic pancreatic cancer on Friday at the age of 87.
