Relief is on the way for some 60,000 drivers who travel through the intersection of Prince William Parkway and Old Bridge Road.

The Board of County Supervisors is expected to approve more than $1.6 million today to add another left-turn lane to the westbound parkway and extendthe turn lanes going both east and west on the parkway.

“This is a small project that is going to make a big impact for people,” said Board Chairman Sean Connaughton.

He said the extended eastbound merge lane would also cut down on the number of crashes that occur at the intersection.

“This will greatly ease the flow of traffic,” said Craig Gerhart, county executive.

The 2002 road bond project will begin later this month and end in April 2007.

“Hopefully we’ll do most of the work on off-peak hours and avoid delays,” said Tom Blaser, the county’s transportation division chief.
