Florida legislators are taking their first votes this year on a new state budget. House and Senate committees are expected to vote Wednesday on rival $74 billion spending plans.
HOUSE PANEL OKS BAN ON TEXTING WHILE DRIVING
Florida lawmakers on Wednesday got one step closer to a statewide ban on texting while driving. The House Economics Affair committee cleared a bill by a 16-1 vote that would make texting while driving a secondary offense. That means police have to first stop drivers for another offense, such as speeding.
FLORIDA HOUSE PANEL OKS ABORTION BILL
The abortion debate reignited Wednesday in a divided Florida House committee that approved a bill seeking to ban sex- and race-selective abortions. The proposal would punish abortion providers for knowingly terminating pregnancies because of the unborn child’s race or because the parents wanted a boy but were going to have a girl, or vice versa.
4 KILLED IN WRONGWAY CRASH NEAR FORT LAUDERDALE
Four people were killed early Wednesday when a sports utility vehicle traveling the wrong way on Interstate 95 crashed into their minivan. The SUV had been chased by Opa-Locka police just before turning onto I-95.
