One person dead after car crashes into a Connecticut apartment building, setting it on fire

One person is dead after a car crashed into a multi-family home in Manchester, Connecticut, on Thursday, setting the building on fire.

The driver was found dead near his vehicle, Lt. Ryan Shea said. Seven adults and seven children were in the building when the crash occurred near 2:45 a.m., said Daniel French, chief of Manchester Fire-Rescue-EMS. The residents of the building escaped unharmed.

“It was a defensive operation early on because of the volume of fire,” French told reporters, adding that firefighters had to attack the fire from the outside to keep their firefighters safe.

“The vehicle was traveling eastbound on Center Street and traveled over the double yellow lines off the roadway, through a fence and trees ultimately crashing into 207/209 Center Street,” Shea said. “The investigation into this incident is ongoing.”
