Anne Arundel County Schools Superintendent Kevin Maxwell made his first personnel appointments Wednesday by filling some vacancies and creating some new positions.

The Board of Education approved the hiring or promotion of seven new administrators. Many of the new hires came from Montgomery County and Baltimore County Public Schools. Before taking over in Anne Arundel, Maxwell was a community superintendent in Montgomery. Salaries for the new administrators ranged from $111,964 to $141,578.

George Margolies was named Maxwell?s new chief of staff.

He previously served as the staff director for the Montgomery

County Board of Education. The chief of staff position did not exist during Interim Superintendent Nancy Mann?s tenure. Margolies will oversee the district?s public information office, legal counsel and the division of accountability, assessment and research. The chief of staff will also be the chief liaison between the district and the government and business communities.

Before Maxwell?s arrival, Bob Leib had served as government and business director. Leib and budget director Dennis Hirsch were informed late last month, before Maxwell had signed a contract, that they would be fired to make room for Maxwell?s new staff.

Maxwell could not be reached for comment Wednesday night. Rick Kovelant, an attorney representing Leib, also could not be reached for comment. It was unclear Wednesday night whether Leib and Hirsch had been officially let go.

In addition to a chief of staff, Maxwell also appointed:

» Arlen Liverman, who was director of high schools, was named to the position of acting deputy superintendent.

» Beverly Pish, director of accountability, research and testing for Baltimore County Public Schools, was named to a similar position in Anne Arundel.

» George Arlotto, principal of Wheaton High School in Montgomery County, was named to a position as director of high schools for Anne Arundel.

» Lynn Whittington was named to a position as assistant superintendent for instructional services. She served as director of curriculum for Anne Arundel schools from 2003-05 before becoming director of school improvement for Baltimore County Schools last year.
