D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray on Wednesday swore in nine members of the District’s Financial Literacy Council on Wednesday, hours after he declared April to be Financial Literacy Month.
“Financial literacy is the essential prerequisite, along with working hard, to succeeding in our society,” Gray said in a statement. “Working together, this council will guide programs that help residents learn how to manage their finances effectively and recover from hardships like bankruptcy and foreclosures.”
Gray appointed six members of the panel. Council Chairman Kwame Brown, Ward 7 Councilwoman Yvette Alexander, who chairs the council’s consumer affairs committee, and District Chief Financial Officer Natwar Gandhi each appointed one member.
The council’s membership is:
- Tamara Haye Daufour, Chairwoman
- Idriys Abdullah
- Yasuko Fumuro
- Angela Joyner
- Malik Muhammad
- Brian Pick
- Joseph Vaughan
- Kevin Wrege
- Jamila Yore
In a statement, Brown praised the rollout of the new committee.
“They will play an important role in helping District residents become even more knowledgeable on how to make informed financial decisions and learn about wealth building,” Brown said.
