Robert Mueller’s team silent on potential interview with Trump nearly three weeks after counteroffer

President Trump’s legal team reportedly has not received any word from special counsel Robert Mueller’s team about a counteroffer submitted nearly three weeks ago detailing terms for a potential interview.

Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani confirmed to the Washington Examiner earlier this month that a counteroffer was sent to Mueller’s team regarding the interview — a move that came after negotiations concerning the scope of questions that could be asked — but Mueller’s office has not issued a response since then, CNN reports.

Mueller is investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election and whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Kremlin. He also has expanded his investigation to look at possible obstruction of justice after Trump fired then-FBI Director James Comey.

Giuliani said in July that Trump’s legal team had attempted to convince Mueller to narrow the scope of questioning in a potential interview. He told CNN earlier this month that the legal team would possibly consider questions about obstruction of justice, provided they aren’t “perjury traps.”

Trump said in January he was “looking forward” to being interviewed by Mueller, and indicated a willingness to doing so under oath. Then-White House lawyer Ty Cobb backtracked and clarified that Trump was in a hurry and meant only that he was willing to meet with Mueller.

Mueller has informed Trump’s legal team that the president is not a criminal target in his investigation, but is still a subject of the probe, according to the Washington Post.

Trump has repeatedly denounced the investigation as a “witch hunt.”
