Oregon’s ‘Terrible Tilly’ lighthouse hits market for $6.5 million

An elusive lighthouse off the northwest coast of Oregon nicknamed the “Terrible Tilly” is up for sale at $6.5 million.

Enduring thrashing waves for over a century and a half, Tillamook Rock Lighthouse stands on basalt rock to form a private island about a mile offshore Tillamook Head, which has been vacant since 1957, according to Oregon Live.

The island, which can only be reached by helicopter and remains part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge, has had several owners over the years, most recently converting the structure into a columbarium, or a public storage for urns.

Around 30 funeral urns were placed in the structure before it lost its columbarium license in 1999. The lighthouse is currently owned by real estate developers Mimi Morissette and Cathy Riley.

Morissette said there was room for up to 300,000 urns to be stored and had hopes of turning it into a large columbarium before they lost their license, according to KMUN.

First built in 1881, the light station was later decommissioned in 1957. Stories of it in operation tell a tale of difficult boat landings and extreme conditions weathered by crews over the years, which earned the tower its nickname.

Around $1.5 million of the proceeds from the sale will go toward refurbishing the island and its structure, replacing eroding metal in the tower with titanium panels and doors, and installing a “titanium honeycomb” for urns, Morissette told Oregon Live.
