The capital region’s congressional delegation Thursday took another crack at obtaining $1.5 billion for Metro funding.

“You can’t have a healthy national capital region without a healthy Metro,” Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., said in a news release.

Davis and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., co-sponsored the bill, which would provide $1.5 billion in federal funds during the next 10 years for the mass-transit system. The District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia would have to come up with their own funds under the

legislation.

The bill is identical to one that passed the House last session but died when the Senate recessed before it took up the matter. Advocates say that it will keep the Metrorail system in top condition and ease traffic headaches for millions of commuters. Opponents say that it’s classic pork-barrel spending.
