Chuck Schumer demands transcript of Trump meeting with Russians

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday demanded that the Trump administration provide a transcript of the president’s conversation with the Russian ambassador in order to determine whether Trump divulged classified information.

Schumer, D-N.Y., said the Trump administration should provide an unedited transcript to the Senate Intelligence Committee, a panel that requires security clearances that would allow lawmakers to view the information.

Schumer called the allegation in the Washington Post that Trump revealed classified information “stunning behavior” that “may have badly damaged our national security.”

“We need to be able to quickly assess whether this report is true and what exactly was said,” Schumer said in a Senate floor speech Tuesday.

Schumer said Trump’s morning tweet about his conversation with the Russians “undercut his advisors’ carefully worded denials and seem to confirm the report that he shared the information in question.”

Trump tweeted that he shared “facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety,” with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak.

Schumer said Trump’s tweet, which he said conflicted with the denials from advisors, and his firing last week of FBI Director James Comey, have created “a crisis of credibility,” and “an erosion of trust in the presidency.”
