DALLAS (AP) — A Dallas police officer has been hit by a fleeing car and ended up on the hood before opening fire on the driver who then crashed the vehicle.

Police say the suspect was in critical condition Monday. The officer was hospitalized in stable condition with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The officer was searching for a fugitive Sunday night when he saw alleged drug-related activity near a hotel.

The officer approached a man who hopped into a car and drove off. The vehicle struck the officer, who was on the hood for about 50 yards but opened fire before being thrown from the car that wrecked nearby.

Police didn’t immediately say whether the driver was shot or hurt in the crash, or if he was the person originally sought.
