BALDWIN, N.Y. (AP) — Meteorologists have confirmed that a tornado touched down in upstate New York during storms Tuesday evening, causing some damage but no injuries.
The national Weather Service tells the Elmira Star-Gazette (http://goo.gl/yBl84F ) the EF-1 tornado caused damage to several barns and houses in the Chemung County town of Baldwin at about 7 p.m.
A twister of that magnitude would have winds of about 100 mph. A survey of the area Wednesday showed it was on the ground for about two miles.
Investigators plan to check a site in Afton, east of Binghamton, to determine if another tornado struck there.
Baldwin is in the Southern Tier near Elmira.
