Greyson Chance claims he was ‘completely abandoned’ by Ellen DeGeneres

Singer Greyson Chance alleged talk show host Ellen DeGeneres essentially abandoned him after discovering him online.

Chance went viral on social media in 2010 after uploading his cover of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” on YouTube. DeGeneres subsequently invited him on her show and signed him to her new music label, distributed by Interscope Geffen A&M Records, complete with an entire team behind the then-12-year-old singer.

At the time, DeGeneres told him that the two of them were “going to do this together,” but after his second album failed two years later, the host left him feeling “completely abandoned” Chance said in a recent interview.

“I couldn’t get ahold of her, couldn’t talk to her,” Chance said. “Whenever I would come on the show, it was such a fake smile. She wouldn’t even ask, ‘How are you doing? How are you holding up?’ It was just like, ‘Here’s what we’re going to talk about. We’ll see you on there.'”

Chance would appear on the talk show 10 times before its final season in 2022 despite eventually being dropped by DeGeneres’s label. The singer claimed he declined to appear for the host’s final season, even though he was grateful to the host for giving him his start. Among his appearances, he once discussed his coming out as gay, to which DeGeneres responded she was proud of him.

“She had nothing to do with that. … [When I came out,] I hadn’t spoken to her in years,” Chance said. “That’s so messed up — that you’re now showing the world as if we’re so tight, we’re so good. And behind the scenes, you are this insanely manipulative person.”

“I’ve never met someone more manipulative, more self-centered, and more blatantly opportunistic than her,” he said.

Just before ending her talk show, DeGeneres made a public apology following reports that her television crew members were employed in an alleged toxic workplace.
