FAIRFIELD, Calif. (AP) — Police say a standoff of more than seven hours in the Northern California city of Fairfield has ended with the suspect dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Residents were warned to stay inside after police received multiple reports of shots fired near a community park and middle school at about 1 p.m. Monday
Fairfield police Sgt. Rob Lenke said at least one house and a car were hit.
Officers heard additional shots from a home as they arrived. A SWAT team surrounded the house for hours and negotiators tried unsuccessfully to contact the person inside.
Police tell KCRA-TV that at about 8:30 p.m. they entered the house and found the man dead on the second floor. They say he had apparently shot himself.
Fairfield is a city of about 100,000 people about 40 miles northeast of San Francisco.
