Jackson, a D.C based stylist, talks about this year’s 19th Annual Golden Scissors Awards. The theme is “Hair GaGa … Taking Beauty to the Xtreme,” and the event begins at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Washington Convention Center. Why was this year’s awards themed around Lady Gaga?

It was really centered around the whole concept of Gaga because what Lady Gaga represents is what we’ve been doing in the market in D.C. for over 20 years. So, wild, outrageous costumes, mirrors, makeup, hairpieces, costumes, big, wide shoes.

What influence do you think Lady Gaga has on the fashion industry?

I think she’s probably the biggest phenomenon in style that I’ve seen in probably the last 20 years. I think she excites young people and she pushes the envelope of creativity. … She’s rebellious in style and fashion and she goes against the grain.

Why did you create the Golden Scissors Awards?

It was an opportunity to use this as a platform to bring communities together and cross cultures. … A stylist can do straight or kinky whether you’re black, white, Asian. If you’re a great stylist, you can do everything.

You’ve been a stylist for more than 20 years. What do you love about it?

Oh, I love the creativity of young people. Hell, I’m 46 years old and I can be literally inspired by some young person coming up with some crazy concoction, like literally standing in the middle of the street scratching your head like “What were you thinking?”

What is a new style trend that’s up and coming right now?

I love hair that has angles and dimensions and bobs and wacky updos and the pompadour. You know, just things that are different.

How would you define the word style?

I think style means that you have the ability to step into your own creativity. Being able to call your own shots and making your own rules … going against the norm.
