Donald Trump’s attempts to make inroads with Hispanic voters don’t appear to be working, according to a new survey that finds nearly three-quarters of the key demographic think the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is racist.
Seventy-three percent of Hispanics in a Univision survey released Thursday responded “yes” when asked, “Do you believe Donald Trump is racist?” Twenty percent said they do not consider the billionaire to be racist, while 7 percent were unsure.
Another 77 percent of Hispanic voters said they hold an unfavorable view of Trump, compared to the 69 percent of respondents who view his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton favorably.
Contributing to the negative opinions many Hispanics have of Trump is their widespread opposition to two of his leading policy proposals.
Fifty-two percent of Hispanics said they oppose Trump’s calls for a temporary ban on non-American Muslims seeking to enter the U.S. (a proposal he’s tried to refine in recent weeks), while 76 percent disagree with his plan to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border if elected president.
Overall, Clinton carries a 48-point lead over Trump in terms of which White House hopeful Hispanics plan to vote for in November. Fewer than 20 percent of Hispanic voters said they will cast their ballot for Trump.
An analysis by NBC News suggested the GOP nominee will need to secure at least 40 percent of the Hispanic vote in order to win the presidency this cycle, although some election experts have said an overwhelming turnout among white voters could offset that figure.
The Univision survey of 1,000 registered Hispanic voters was conducted July 1-10. Results contain a margin of error plus or minus 3 percentage points.
